8.5-8.6 Flashcards
What is the first step (N) in creating a Lewis dot structure?
N: Determine the number of valence electrons needed by the bonding atoms in a covalent molecule. Hydrogen and fluorine only need 2.
What is the second step (A) in making a Lewist dot diagram?
A: Find the total number of valence electrons available from the molecule. Add up the valence electrons of each atom in the molecule.
What is the third step (S) in making a Lewis dot diagram?
S: Find the number of electrons shared by atoms by subtracting the available valence electrons from the electrons needed.
S = N-A
How do you find the number of bonding pairs of electrons in a Lewis dot structure?
BP: Number if shared electrons divided by 2.
BP=S/2
How do you find the number of lone pairs in a molecule?
Take the number of available electrons and subtract the number of shared electrons, then divide by 2.
LP: (A-S)/2
