8.4 Translocation Flashcards
1
Q
what is translocation
A
Translocation is the movement of materials in plants from the leaves to other parts of the plant. sucrose and amino acids are products of photosynthesis which may be needed by certain parts of the plant for respiration and nutrition. these substances are transported by phloem tubes which are made of living cells
2
Q
what are sources
A
parts of the plants that release sucrose and amino acids
3
Q
what are sinks
A
the parts of plants that use or store sucrose and amino acids
4
Q
why some parts of a plant may act as a source and a sink at different times during the life of a plant
A
- during winter and at night when less photosynthesis is taking place phloem tubes will transport dissolved sucrose and amino acids from the roots to other parts of plant for respiration
- during spring and when plant is growing sucrose and. amino acids will be transported from source like roots to developing areas
- in the day leaves are the sources and stems, roots, flowers or growing shoots are the sinks
