8.4: The Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of and what does it do?
A
- Consists of nerves that carry sensory messages to the CNS and nerves that send information from the CNS to muscles and glands
2
Q
What is the difference between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems?
A
Sympathetic: Fight/Flight
Parasympathetic: Rest/Digest
3
Q
Somatic vs. Autonomic Nerves
A
Somatic: Controls skeletal muscles, bones, and skin
Autonomic: Motor nerves that control organs, maintains homeostasis
4
Q
What is the neurilemma?
A
The membrane that surrounds the axon
5
Q
What are stem cells?
A
Cells that have not specialized into tissues
6
Q
Explain the grey matter
A
Contains unmyelinated sheaths and does not have a neurilemma
7
Q
Explain the white matter
A
Contains myelinated sheaths and has a neurilemma
