8.3 (Term 1) Flashcards
Learning Objectives Interpret ticker timer tapes to recognise state of motion: constant velocity, acceleration or deceleration. Use ticker timers to gather data to determine speed and acceleration of an object moving in a straight line. Glossary Average Speed Instantaneous Speed Ticker Timers
What does average speed consider?
Average speed looks at the entire journey, including total distance and total time.
What does average speed not provide information about?
Average speed does not provide much information about the speed at any instant during the journey.
What is instantaneous speed?
Instantaneous speed is the speed of the car at any given point along the journey.
How does instantaneous speed relate to average speed?
Instantaneous speed could be different from the average speed of the entire journey.
How does a ticker timer work?
A vibrating arm hits a disk of carbon paper 50 times each second, leaving black dots that are a fiftieth of a second apart.
How can we measure average speed using a ticker timer?
Average speed between each pair of dots can be measured by dividing the distance by the time interval.
How can calculations be made easier when using a ticker timer?
Every fifth dot can be used for calculations.
What does five dots represent in terms of time?
Five dots represent five fiftieths of a second (5/50), which is 0.1 seconds.
What does greater distance between each dot indicate?
The more distance between each dot, the faster the tape was travelling.
