8.2 Linear Motion Flashcards
What is speed?
Speed can be defined as the rate at which someone or something moves or is able to move.
What is the scientific unit for speed?
m/s
How is average speed calculated?
Average speed can be calculated by dividing the distance travelled by the time taken.
V=D/T
What is m/s?
Metres per second
What is distance?
The physical length of the displacement path travelled.
What is displacement?
the straight line distance between the start point and the finish point.
What is the speed in terms of measurement?
Speed is a measure of the rate at which distance is covered.
Speed is a scalar quantity, one that requires only a magnitude (kilometers per hour).
What is the differences between distance and displacement?
Distance: The length of the actual path travelled by an object, scalar quantity, it cannot be zero
Displacement: The shortest distance travelled between initial point to final point of path travelled by an object, vector quantity, it can be zero.
What is velocity in terms of measurement?
Velocity is a measure of the rate of change in position.
Velocity is a vector quantity, one that requires a magnitude (also km/h) and a direction.
Velocity measures displacement over time, as opposed to distance.
What is displacement in terms of measurement?
Displacement is a measure of how far from the starting point an object ends up, similar to the colloquial, ‘as the crow flies.’
