8.1.3 - Manages adult px with heterophoria Flashcards
Reason for treating heterophoria?
-Alleviate symptoms
-prevent phoria from breaking down to a tropia
What are the symptoms of decompensating phoria?
-Vision: Diplopia -> usually intermittent & for near / Blurry vision
-Asthenopia: Eye strain /Headaches / sore eyes
-Binocular: Difficulty with stereopsis / difficulty changing focus / mono discomfort
What are the main treatment options for a decom phoria?
- remove the cause of decompensation
- eye exercises
- refractive modification
- prismatic correction
- surgery
- Remove the cause of decompensation - explain?
Change these factors:
-long hours of close work,
-poor illumination / contrast
-a sudden increase
in close up work / monocular work
-poor health, pregnancy, trauma
- poor sensory fusion due to (unilateral cataract / anisometropia/ monovision in presbyopes(contraindicated in not well controlled phoria)
Why do we need refractive correction as a management?
-achieve appropriate levels of accommodation and convergence
-Blurring makes fusion more difficult- correcting even small amount of Rx can improve binocular function
How to modify RX for Myopia & SOP?
least possible minus for clear distance vision
How to Modify the RX for Myopia & XOP?
Most minus but minimum over correction
How would you modify the rx for Hyperopia & SOP
Max plus Rx without causing blur
How would you modify rx for Hyperopia & XOP?
Consider partial correction
