8.1 Gases and the Kinetic-Molecular Theory Flashcards
What is a gas?
no fixed volume; free to move over a large distance
What is the kinetic-molecular theory?
states that heat is associated with the thermal motion of particles taking into account the important assumptions that individual gas molecules take up no volume and collisions between gas molecules are perfectly elastic
What is an ideal gas?
a gas that obeys all of the postulates of the kinetic-molecular theory and has properties that can be predicted by the ideal gas law
What is a real gas?
gas the deviates from the behavior predicted by the idea gas law for two reasons: forces of attraction between the particles in a gas are not zero and the volume of the particles is not zero
What is STP?
standard temperature and pressure; 0 celsius and 1 atm
What is the conversion between liter and m^3?
1 m^3 = 1000 L
What is the conversion from celsius to kelvin?
K = C + 273.15
When does water freeze and boil?
freezes at 0C and boils at 100C
What is the conversion of 1 atm to torr to mm Hg and kPa?
1 atm = 760 torr = 760 mmHg = 101.35 kPa
