8.1 Force and acceleration Flashcards
Define friction
force opposing the motion of a surface that moves or tries to move across another surface
What is newtons 1st law?
an object continues at rest or in uniform motion unless it is acted on by a resultant force
An object moving at constant velocity is either :
- acted on by no forces
2. the forces acting on it are balanced (resultant force is 0)
What is newtons 2nd law?
the rate of change of momentum of an object is proportional to the resultant force on it
What is the equation affiliated with newtons 2nd law?
The resultant force of an object in a direction = the mass of that objet x the acceleration of that object in that direction F= △p/t p=mv F= m△v/t v/t= acceleration F= ma
Define weight
the force of gravity acting on an object
What is the formula for weight?
w = mg
What is weight also equal to?
Force
Define inertia
resistance of an object to change of its motion
resistance to change of motion
