8.1 Flashcards
System of equations
Problems with 2 unknown quantities and are often translated using 2 equations with 2 unknowns.
Process to solving a system of equation.
look for solution to problem by trying to find a pair of numbers that are true for both.
- Familiarize
- Reword and translate by making table
Unless noted otherwise how are variables ordered?
Alphabetically
Consistent
Any system that has at least one solution
Inconsistent
System with no solution
Dependent
One equation in system can be obtained by multiplying both sides of another by a constant
Substitution method
Relies on having one variable isolated.
A system with no solution…graph of equation will ________ intersect
Not
Elimination method
Makes use of addition to principal.
If a=b then a+c=b+c
Special rules when solving systems of 2 linear equations with 2 variables.
- If 0=0 infinite # of solutions
Equations are dependent and solution exists so system is consistent - If both sides are not =
0=7 is false
No solution and inconsistent
Story problems
Motion, distance, rate and time
d=rt
Or
r=d/t
t=d/r
Mixing formula
g+s=x
Simple interest
Principal•rate•time=interest
p+s=s
Motion problems formulas
d=rt
r=d/t
And
t=d/r
