Q

What is the Zionist Movement, and how did Britain respond to what it represented?

A

In the Zionist Movement, the Jews believed God promised them that Palestine would be their homeland. Because of this, many Israeli people fought for the land. Britain believed that the Israeli people should indeed have the land, so they made the Balfour Declaration, which granted them homeland in Palestine. The British supported this, because they just wanted the surviving Jews from World War II to live in peace in their very own homeland, because they went through so much. The act was well-intentioned, but there were already Palestinian Muslims living in Palestine, so what were they going to do, kick them out of their homeland?

Q

How did India get their independence from Britain, and what was the result?

A

The Indian independence movement was first only supported by a few Indian intellectuals and activists like Jawaharial Nehru, but soon, the entire nation of India supported the idea of being a free country. Eventually, Britain gave in and freed them. There were three divisions made to India because of religious disputes. There was Muslim Pakistan, Hindu India, and Bangladesh, which was sort of like a buffer separating Pakistan from India.

Q

Talk about two conflicts that were caused by nationalist movements in either Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Tibet, Basque Country, Kashmir, or East Timor.

A

There was bloody conflict between two Irish factions. One of the factions wanted Northern Ireland to stay a part of the UK, while the other wanted it to join Southern Ireland, making the Republic of Ireland. After the fighting, Northern Ireland is its own nation, but it isn’t part of this republic.

In Cyprus, the Greeks live in the south, the Turks live in the north, and there is a buffer zone in between them controlled by the Turkish Cypriots. Eventually, the Greek military killed the president of Cyprus, which made the Turks think that the Greeks were going to take over the island, so they sent their own Turkish military into Cyprus. Fighting happened, a ceasefire was put into effect, the buffer zone was built, and the island was split. There have been attempts to make peace with each other, but none of them succeeded, as both sides want to have control over the whole nation.
