4 Qs to answer in reporting research & results, with corresponding sections
- why, with what expectations did you conduct your study? => intro & theory section
- How did you carry out your study?
=> method section - What did you find? according to APA guidelines
=> result sections - So what are the theoretical & managerial implications, relative to prior findings in the area and with limitations?
=> discussion section
Explanation of Prof. Scherer’s experiment
- Attribution process of good/bad result when interacting with humans/machines, through a between-subjects design.
- There are conflicting theories predicting 1) more extremes evaluations with humans, 2) same response.
- An ANOVA analysis did not find any significant difference in results.
Sample rule of thumb
have at least 30 subjects for each condition
suspicion probe:
- how
- against what
- ask subjects what they think the experiment was about
- you want to exclude those who guessed, to avoid desirability bias and related experiment artifacts (behaving as if…)
evaluating other people’s studies: 4 guidelines + takeaway
- which kind of research design was used?
- how were IVs manipulated and DVs measured?
- how much and which data is included VS missing?
- how was data analyzed?
- groups defined how
- outliers treated how
- covariates & control variables used
- statistical power of the tests
=> even researchers make mistakes!
evaluating mgmt research: 4 criteria
- internal validity
- external validity
- measurement validity
- reliability (replication studies are often not published!)
what is highly valuable in research?
multi-method research!
“methodological triangulation” i.e. combining different approaches
answering the why Q: aspects
- types of hypotheses
- null hypothesis & alternative hypothesis
answering the How Q
research designs
- exploratory
- descriptive
- experimental
options
- cross-sectional
- single cross-sectional design
- multiple cross-sectional d.
- longitudinal design
SAMPLE EXAM Q
How would you test the hyp.:
chocolate makes for happier babies
- which design?
- how would you operationalize ‘happiness’?
possible exam Q
scaling techniques: taxonomy w relative pros & cons
suggestions for preparation
- understand concepts
- review assignments
- practise with moodle multiple questions
