8. Reline and Rebase Flashcards
What is the greatest issue with RPDs
Lack of stability
Lack of stability is correlated to
- Poor tissue adaptation
- Occlusal scheme (centric and eccentric movements0
How do we improve tissue adaptation
Either reline or rebase
What is the difference between relining and rebasing
Relining
-Resurfacing the tissue portion (intaglio surface) of the denture base with new material
Rebase
-Replacement of entire denture base with new material
Which is done more often reline or rebase
reline (rebase not commonly done)
What is a consequence of ridge resorption (loss of ridge support) for the denture? How about for the individual’s facial estehtics?
over-extended flanges, horizontal shift of dentures, abused tissue, change in occlusion (settling of denture) … over-closed (loss of VDO)
What patient complaints may suggest they have lost ridge support
- My denture is loose
- I get food under the denture
- My face looks collapsed
- My bite has changed
- I can’t chew foods .
Number 1 reason to do a reline over denture remake is
cost
Indications for reline
- Poor retention/support/stability
- Excessive over-/underextended flanges
- Fracture of denture base
- Abused tissue (may be sign of fungal infection however)
Immediate dentures usually require a reline how long after insertion
within 1 yr of insertion
Decision to reline assumes the dentist is happy with what aspects of the denture
teeth position and appearance (more patient) and minimal wear of the teeth
-VDO is correct or can be corrected (with occlusal adjustments)
Old dentures typically have a decreased VDO as a result of
- Wear of teeth
- Settling of denture
