What are some problems with them?
Metoclopromide: tardive dyskenesia and dystonia
Promethazine: lower’s seizure threshold
Prochloperazine: case reports of malformations in infants
What are the serotonin antagonist preferred for pregnancy?
What side effects do they have?
Odnasetron: may cause septum defects, miscarriage, low birth wt
Granisetron: no pregnancy studies conducted
When are glucocorticoids safe to use in pregnancy for refractory n/v?
Only use short term and in the 2nd and 3rd trimester
What can pregnant women take for reflux?
Antacids
Sucralfate
H2 antagonist
PPI’s
What reflux med is never safe for pregnant women
Bismuth subsalicylate
Ranitidine and cimetidine in nursing?
They excrete in the milk but are considered safe to use
What is safe for constipation?
Basically everything
Fiber, decussate, Mg, lactulose, biscodyl
Diarrhea meds?
Dietary changes (LOL) Loperamide
Is loperamide really pregnancy safe?
Human studies are inconclusive, however animal studies have shown teratogenic effects
What is the preferred antipyretic?
Acetaminophen
What are the preferred cough and cold meds for preggo’s?
Diphenhydramine and chlorphreniramine are preferred
