What is a hernia?
Protrusion of an organ through a wall which is designed to contain it
What may the contents of a hernia be?
Small bowel
Fat
Fascia
plenty of other things
What are common hernias found in the groin?
Inguinal
Femoral
Why are men more likely to have inguinal hernias?
Testicles descend from abdomen in utero through inguinal canal with some peritoneum
i.e there are more structures in the inguinal canal in men
3 arteries, 3 nerves, 3 other things for spermatic cord
What are the two types of inguinal hernia?
Indirect inguinal hernia
Direct inguinal hernia
How do you differentiate direct and indirect inguinal hernias?
- Stand patient up
- Reduce the hernia
- Cover the deep inguinal ring
- Ask patient to cough
If hernia pops back out, it’s direct (going through superficial)
If hernia doesn’t pop back out, it’s indirect
