8. Decision Making Flashcards
1
Q
Why are perfect decisions impossible?
A
- limited info
- info is ambiguous
- time for decisions is limited
- cognitive resources are limited
2
Q
What is a heuristic?
A
‘rule of thumb’
- mental shortcuts that reduce processing demands on our cognitive systems
- allow for solutions to be made quickly rather than attending to all information and possibilities
- they produce systematic errors (biases)
3
Q
What biases and errors are heuristics responsible for?
A
- representativeness
- availability
- adjustment and anchoring
- framing
4
Q
What is availability in heuristics?
A
- properties are assessed by the ease with which instances come to mind
- can assess frequency and probability of an occurrence/event
5
Q
What is adjustment and anchoring in heuristics?
A
- different start points lead to different estimates which are biased towards the initial value
- people will make an estimate and then adjust
- irrelevant info can bias the initial estimate
6
Q
What is framing in heuristics?
A
- you make different decisions depending on how the situation was framed
- options are presented as gains/losses
- high certainty of a gain is the most probable option
7
Q
How do biases and errors vary?
A
- biases are making the wrong choice but for a reason
8
Q
What makes a good heuristic?
A
- applicable to many scenarios
- doesn’t require lots of information/effort
