User may not have consented to their personal data being collected and used.

How can we be sure our data is safe from unauthorised users.
What are some ethical issues with misuse of data?
Data collected for one purpose being used for another.
What are some ethical issues with ‘Big Brother’?
A breach of basic human rights, as personal data is being used by the government to monitor people.

Everything you do stays online for years.
What are some ethical issues with profiling?
Large organisation accumulating data to profile individuals.

Software developers should be better rewarded.
Software should be free as companies are exploitive.

Hackers gaining access to personal data for fraud/ criminal activity.

People’s behaviour changes when online, leading to bullying, trolling and abuse.

The internet makes some people believe they can say anything without any consequences.

New technology is taking peoples jobs.

People without access may be disadvantaged.
What is a Code of Conduct?
A voluntary set of rules that define the ways in which individuals or companies behave.
What are legal issues?
Factors that have been made into laws.
What are some legal issues?
Difficult to prosecute someone if they break a UK law in another country and proving where the offense took place.
Laws become out of date quickly.
What is the Data Protection Act? (7)
Data must be:
Fairly and lawfully processed
Processed for limited purposes
Adequate and relevant only
Accurate
Kept no longer than necessary
Secure
Not transferred to countries without adequate data protection.
What is the Freedom of Information Act?
Public organisations must allow public access to their data records. (Parliament, police, schools, NHS)
What is the Computer Misuse Act?
Prevents data misuse and cybercrime.
What are the 3 offences of the Computer Misuse Act?
Unauthorised access to computer programs and data.
Unauthorised access with criminal intent
Unauthorised modification of computer material.
What is data misuse?
Using data for purposes other than which it was collected for.
