What is asbestos?
An insulating material which can cause serious health problems and fatal diseases.
Left undamaged, no risk.
When disturbed, released small toxic fibres which can lodge in the lungs and cause illness.

White - Chrysotile
Blue - Crocidolite
Brown - Amosite
When was asbestos made illegal?
White has ben illegal since 1999, others banned 1985.

What is the asbestos procedure for non-licensed work?
Non-licensed work with asbestos needs to be notified to HSE.
Brief written records should be kept for notifiable non-licensed work (NNLW)

- Management Survey
- Refurbishment/demolition Survey
What is an asbestos Management Survey?
- Locate, assess and advise on its management during occupation
- No sampling of materials or analysis is undertaken
What is an asbestos Refurbishment/demolition Survey?
- Required when a premises, or part of it, requires updating.
- Samples of materials suspected of asbestos are taken an analysed
- Recommendations are made regarding their management

- The duty holder must undertake a risk assessment
- All work must be done by a licensed contractor
- An asbestos register must be produced and regularly updated

What should you do if you identify asbestos unexpectedly during an inspection?
- Duty holder must assess whether the premises contains asbestos, if so, what condition it is in
- Assess the risk & produce an asbestos management plan
- Produce asbestos register
- Make the register available to all relevant parties who might disturb it
- Review the register regularly (HSE recommend 6 monthly)
What are the penalties for asbestos offences?
Health and Safety (Offences) Act 2008 enables fines to a maximum £20,000 and possibility of 12 months imprisonment.
Higher courts would impose no limit.
