*8. Angiogenesis Flashcards
What are the three ways that a blood vessel can be made?
Vasculogenesis (from bone marrow progenitor cells)
Angiogenesis (sprouting of vessels from existing ones)
Arteriogeneis (collateral growth)
What is angiogenesis?
Angiogenesis is the formation of a new blood vessel from pre-existing blood vessels. This is also known as sprouting angiogenesis
REMEMBER: there are other ways of making new blood vessels other than angiogenesis
Angiogenesis is the most common way in which new blood vessels are formed e.g. in wound healing or the menstrual cycle
What happens in vasculogenesis?
During development, the contribution of bone marrow progenitor cells is very important in the early stages of blood vessel formation - this is vasculogenesis.
Blood vessels are the first organ systems that form in the embryo - without blood vessels, nothing else can form
What happens in arteriogenesis ?
There is a collateral growth that is dependent on shear stress and external factors like macrophages. A blood vessel gets obstructed and new vessels form in order to allow blood flow to continue past the blockage
