Archetype
An archetype is a perfect example or model of something. If you have long blonde hair, a sparkly ball gown, and a fairy godmother hovering over your head, you’re the archetype of a fairytale princess
Aside
when an actor steps out of character and speaks directly to the audience, that’s an aside.
Assonance
Blue cartoons play through the boob tube” is an example of assonance — when a bunch of words in a row share similar sounds (like the “oo” sound in the quote).
Asyndeton
she eliminates conjunctions like “and” or “but.” This rhetorical device works to make a speech more dramatic and effective by speeding up its rhythm and pace
Atmosphere
Atmosphere also describes the feeling of a place. Police presence creates a paranoid atmosphere among protesters.
Ballad
A ballad is a song that tells a story, and it can be dramatic, funny, or romantic.
Blank Verse
type of poetry that has a regular meter, usually iambic pentameter, but no rhyme. Most of Shakespeare’s plays are written in blank verse.
Cacophony
is a mishmash of unpleasant sounds, often at loud volume
