AB form

Binary: Two distinctly different sections of music

Ternary: three sections of music, the first two are distinctly different and the final section is a repeat of the beginning section

Rondo: A main theme (A) alternates with one or more contrasting themes (B, C)

Tempo marking indicating to gradually speed the beat of the music up.

How you play or sing a note (example: legato, staccato, accent)
crescendo
Dynamic marking indicating to play while increasing in volume - get louder slowly.
decrescendo
Dynamic marking indicating to play while gradually decreasing in volume - get softer slowly.
Dynamics
Change in volume (loud to soft, soft to loud)
Flat
An accidental that lowers the pitch of a note by a half step
Form
The structure of a song (example: AB, ABA, ABACA)
forte or fortissimo
Dynamic marking indicating to perform loudly.
Harmony
Created by combining two or more pitches at the same time that sound good together.

single line of melody supported by a harmonic accompaniment
Legato
Play smooth and connected
Major
A key, chord or progression that general sounds happy or bright.
Melody
The most recognizable part of a song. The part you can sing or play.
Minor
A key, chord or progression that sounds sad or melancholy.

single line of unaccompanied melody
piano or pianissimo
Dynamic marking indicating to perform quietly.
polyphonic texture
music with two or more melodic lines of relatively equal importance at the same time
Presto or Allegro
Tempos indicating a quick speed.
Rhythm
Organized long & short sounds or silences played over a steady beat.
ritardando
Tempo marking indicating to gradually slow the beat of the music down.
Sharp
An accidental that raises the pitch of a note by a half step
Staccato
detached or disconnected in sound or style

The layers of sound in music
Timbre
Tone quality or unique sounds of each instrument or voice
Time Signature
The symbol at the beginning of a piece usually one over other no line; top number = Beats per measure: bottom number tells you what kind of note gets the beat.
