Segregation
the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment.
Redlining
In the U.S, is redlinnging is discrimainatory practice in which servies (finacial and otherwise) are withheld from potential customers who reside in neighborhoods classified as “hazarfous to investment; residents largely belong to racial and ethnic minorities.
Left Wing
The liberal, socailalist, or radical seation of a political party or system. Left-wing politicus typically inclove a concern for those in society who is adherents perceive as disadvantaged relative to toher as wella as a belief that there are unjustilfeld inequalities that need to be reduced or abolished
The Great Migration
one of the largest movements of people in U>S history. Approximately six million Black people moved from the American South to Northern, Midwestern, and Western states roughly from the 1910s until the 1970s.
Stigmatize
To label somebody or something as socially unacceptable.
Self-degradation
Degradation is defined as the state of being lowered down in respect, status or condition.When a person has become disrespected and is looked down upon, this is an example of degradation. Self-degradation is looking down upon oneself. (self-hate).
Marginalization
Marginalization involves people being denied degrees of power. Marginalization has the potential to result in severe material deprivation, and in its most extreme form can exterminate groups of people who do not have economic, social or political power within a society.
Oppression
Oppression is prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control.
Internalized Oppression
Internalized oppression is the acceptance by members of stigmatized races of negative messages about their own abilities and worth, characterized by their not believing in themselves or others who look like them.
Systematic Oppression
External oppression is defined as the lack of access to goods, services, and opportunities of society. It is the unjust exercise of authority and power by one group over another. It includes imposing one group’s belief system, values and life ways over another group.
Stereotype
A stereotype is a widely held (many people tend to believe an idea) but oversimplified or degrading image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
Minstrel Shows
Minstrel shows were a type of stage entertainment featuring songs, dances, and formulaic comic routines based on stereotyped depictions of black Americans and typically performed by white actors with blackened faces. It developed in the US in the early and mid 19th century and was widely performed until the mid 20th century but is now regarded as highly offensive.
