What is archeology?
A person who studies the evidence left by early people in order to find out about their way of life
How did early peoples get to the Americas?
Water froze between Asia and Alaska forming the Bering land bridge. People migrated across the frozen water to North America, following the food
Why do Native American tribes develop different cultures?
Adapted to their environment
What are the Crusades?
Holy wars fought in Jerusalem between European Christians and Muslims
First time Europeans traveled to other lands
How did the Crusades lead to the Age of Exploration?
Increased interest in travel
Brought back new products such as spices, silk and perfume
Europeans wanted more spices and gold so they went to explore new lands
Explain the importance of the Columbian Exchange.
The exchange of goods between Europe and the Americas.
What are the three motives behind European exploration? (3 Gs)
Challenged the unknown (glory), Spread Christianity (god), Increase the power of country (gold)
What is the Northwest Passage? Which country was looking for this passage?
The French were looking for an all water route through the Americas to the Pacific Ocean.
Explain the reasons for the Spanish defeat of the Aztecs and Inca.

Who are the Pilgrims? What settlement did they create and why?
Pilgrims – came from England to America to escape religious persecution
Settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts – wanted religious freedom
How were the Quakers different from other religious groups of the time?
William Penn founded the colony. It was a place to worship religion freely. They were much more tolerant of other religions.
What is the House of Burgesses?
First representative government in the Americas
Why was the Mayflower Compact created?
first form of self government
Why did England want to start colonies (Mercantilism)?
Mercantilism - economic system where the mother country benefits from its colonies.
Colonies provide mother country with raw materials and mother country sells manufactured goods back to colonies
What land did the British and French fight over in the French and Indian War?
The Ohio River Valley or the disputed land between New France and the English colonies.
What was the result of the French and Indian War?
The British won the war but the large war debt increased tension with the colonies.
What was the of Proclamation 1763?
Law prevented colonists from crossing the Appalachian mountains into Native American Territory.
Why did the British increase taxes in the Colonies after the French and Indian War? Give three examples of laws that taxed the colonies.
The British increased taxes to pay off the war debt.
Sugar Act: Tax on sugar (molasses)
Stamp Act: Tax on legal document such as wills, diplomas, newspapers, playing cards
Townshend Acts: Taxed goods such as paper, paint, lead and tea
What was the Tea Act? Why were colonists angry about it?
The Tea Act lowered the price of tea to persuade colonists to buy it. It was created to assist the British East India Company who sold the tea to the colonists directly. The colonists were angry because Tea was popular and a symbol of England. They felt the tax was unfair.
What happened at the Boston Tea Party? Why?
Colonist led by Samuel Adams dressed as Native Americans and dumped the ta from a British ship into the harbor, destroying all the tea
What is the Boston Massacre? How did colonists use this event as propaganda?
A colonist crowd gathered and started yelling and throwing things at the British soldiers. Someone fired a shot and killed 5 colonists
Paul Revere made a picture that showed a different story aimed to spread anti-British propaganda- made people ANGRY at the British
