7.LS.2- Mitosis Vocabulary Flashcards
Cell cycle
When cells in an organism go through a cycle of growth, development, and division
Mitosis
The process by which parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells
Interphase
The stag of the cell cycle between periods of mitosis in which the cell grows
Prophase
The first phase of mitosis during which chromosomes condenses and the nuclear membrane starts to disappear
Metaphase
The second phase of mitosis during which chromosomes line up
Ana phase
The third of mitosis in which each chromosome is pulled apart by spindle fibers and the resulting daughter chromosomes are pulled to opposite sides of the cell.
Telophase
The fourth and final phase of mitosis during which a nuclear membrane forms around chromosomes n opposite sides of the cell and the chromosomes becomes DNA in a newly formed nucleus.
Cytokinesis
A stag of the cell cycle during which the cell membrane pinches in and the cytokines divides into two daughter cells after mitosis
Centriole
An organelle found near the nucleus in animal cells the forms the spindle fibers that pull chromosomes apart during mitosis.\
Chromosomes
The part of the cell that contains genes
DNA
The chemical found in cells that is the main component of chromosomes and carries genetic information
Centromere
A structure that holds the sister chromitids together
Sister Chromatids
Two identical chromatids that make up a duplicated chromosome
Daughter cell
The result of the cell cycle where two genetically identical cells are formed
