The federal, state and local governments all have the same three branches of government. However, what we call the elected officials is different at each level.

What are elected officials called in the executive and legislative branches at each level? Complete the table below.

*These are the titles of local representatives in
Lawrence. Every city or town throughout the U.S.
decides what to call their elected officials. For
example, the legislative branch in other local
governments might be called the town board, board
of aldermen, city assembly, etc. In Lawrence, we call
them city council members (or city councilors). Some
towns/cities call their executive the “city manager”
instead of the Mayor.
