7c- Muscles And Bones Flashcards
Name 4 of the S factors and what they mean:
Suppleness= to be flexible in movement Strength= To lift heavy weights Speed= To move in a controlled pace Stamina= the time it takes you muscles to carry oxygen for movement
Define synovial fluid
It is the substance that lubricates the joint
Define Ligament
It connects bone to bone
Define cartilage
Smooth muscle at the end of the bone
Define joint
The place where bones meet bones
Define tendon
Connects bone to muscle
Name the three reasons why we have a skeleton
1) Movement
2) Protection
3) Support
Define antagonistic pairs
As one muscle contracts, the other relaxes. An example of an antagonistic pair is the biceps and triceps; to contract - the triceps relaxes while the biceps contracts to lift the arm.
Define thorax
The whole chest area. Intercoastal muscles and the rib cage
Define veins
Releases blood from the body to the heart
Define arteries
Releases blood from the heart to the body
What is a healthy heart rate for a human
70-100
Define respiration
Respiration is the process the body uses to release energy from digested food
Define capillaries
It takes the nutrients and oxygen from the blood to the tissue. That’s why they tend to have very thin walls
Define inhalation
It is breathing in. The rib cage muscles and diaphragm contact. The volume of the thorax increases. The pressure inside the lungs decreases. Air fills the lungs
