7.9: Phylogeny Flashcards
What do phylogenetic trees have in common with cladograms?
They both show relationships between lineages
What is a phylogenetic tree?
A branched diagram depicting evolutionary relationships amongst species over time
What is a cladogram?
A specific type of phylogenetic tree that is used to show evolutionary relatedness amongst species through clades (a group that shares a common ancestor
What is a clade?
Includes any group on a cladogram sharing a common ancestor
What is an outgroup?
It represents the lineage that is the least closely related to the remainder of the organisms
What kind of data can be used to construct a phylogenetic tree?
Morphological similarities or DNA/protein sequence similarities
