7.7 Flashcards
What are the 3 types of testing
Continuity, insulation and bonding
What is continuity testing?
That there is a link between two or more points in a circuit
A resistance link
When reading unknown resistance with a multimeter?
Set the resistance unit to the highest setting before testing and go down till reading is accurate
If resistors are in parallel when area increase resistance decreases what is the total resistance between a 100 ohm and 10 ohm resistor?
Less than 10
What should you do to a live circuit before continuity testing?
Disconnect power
What test should you do before Continuity tests?
Visual inspections
What is ohms law
1 volt to push 1 amp through 1 ohm
What are the 2 types of multimeter?
Analogue and digital
What are the advantages of an analogue multimeter?
See fluctuations on the needle and no battery required
What are the disadvantages of an Analogue multimeter?
Mistakes can be made usually larger and limited on what you can read
What voltage is used to test insulation resistance on aircraft?
250V to 300V
What is bonding for components in aircraft?
Transferring current flow in a safe path between parts
What is good bonding do on an aircraft?
Prevents radio interference
Where does static build up on an aircraft?
Leading edge on wings and nose
If everything is bonded on an aircraft correctly what should be the same overall?
Potential Difference
What unit is bonding tested primarily on for readings?
The master bonding point
Where is the main bonding point usually located in?
Normally in the avionics bay
If a cable is snagged or twisted after striping damaged what should you do?
Cut it off or start again
What are the 3 main crimp tools?
Daniel’s, Mini Daniel’s and AMP (T Head)
What code cable is Airbus and Boeing?
Airbus- ESPM
Boeing- SWPM
What do you used to make sure your using the correct turret and tool with the pin and socket?
A chart will be with all of them to make sure you use the correct one
What is the advantage of ASP terminal lugs (red thing with the hoop)
(4 advantages)
Good conductivity
Uniform
Strong connection
Corrosion proof
On AMP Terminal Lugs how many can you have on 1 terminal and what order for having 3 on 1 terminal?
Up to 4
Face down, face up, spacer, face down
What code should be on a AMP Terminal Lug?
A dot code
When striping a cable how much should you strip?
Half the length of the barrel + 1/32 of a inch
Where are in line sealed splices used?
Areas exposed to the environment like the flaps
What AWG cable Gauge is used for hydraulic crimps
AWG 2 to 8
What is the fundimental difference between manual and hydraulic crimp tools?
Hydraulic can be realeased when needed
What shape crimp is hydraulic tools?
Hexagonal
What chapter is standard practices?
20
What are the 3 types of crimp tests?
Visual Inspection
Tensile Test
Volts Drop Test
When testing crimped fittings what’s first?
Test if correct amount of volts flows through it
What happens after testing the flow in a cable with a crimped fitting?
Pull apart see how much stress it can take
What 2 parts are rear release tools and how are they identified?
The coloured side is insertion tool
White is the extraction tool
Where are Coax cables used for and what should you not do with them?
Radios and don’t bend too much
Where is Aluminium cables used?
In long distances and high current
Airframe cables have another name and where are they used?
Open cables
Exposed environments
What cable is used in LRUs and we wont see?
Equipment cables
What cable is thin but high spec?
Very commonly used
Thin wall cables
How long can Fire resistant cables last?
5 minutes
How long can Fire Proof cables last?
15 minutes
What is the ground cable called?
Fly lead
Pig tale
And sometimes just ground cable
What cable has a mesh to protect it
And what is an issue using them?
Shielded cable
Can interfere with signals if not grounded properly
What cable is specific for its use and can’t be changed by others?
Data Bus Cable
What cables have higher diameter mainly for power transfer and what Gauge is it normally?
Power Feeder
2 to 8 Gauge
What are the last 2 numbers represent?
It’s AWG Gauge
What is conduits?
A protective layer on cables to stop heat
What do we use to support cables?
P Clips
Clove Hitch Knot
What should you fit when passing a cable through a Bulk Head?
Grommet and P Clamp to stop it moving
Why when cable clamps attached to pipes and other items there is a gap?
So heather is not transferred to either
Why are tie wrap guns used not normal cutters?
To keep zip ties flush
How must cables always be positioned?
Lay in parallel
How must a loom be secured?
Individual ties
What must all cables have when turning
Bend radius
What is the issue with bending cables too much
They chafe
What core was coax cables made before and what are they now?
Originally single core
Now stranded
What is cooper loss?
Over stretches signal dies down
What is a BNC fitting and how does it attach?
Bayonet Nut Coupling
A twist motion
What is a TNC fitting and how does it attach?
Threaded Nut Coupling
A thread and more secure
How do you test a Coax cable?
Continuity test
What should you do before testing a Coax cable?
Disconnect from the LRU
What reading should you get from a up to spec Coax cable?
Make sure it reads 10,000 MiliOhms
What is a GVI?
General Visual Inspection
Regarding EWIS what do we look at over time?
Wire Degradation
What should you use to check the back of P Clips?
A Mirror
What is a back shell used for?
To protect the connector of a cable
What should you ensure a cloth is before using it to clean?
