#76 Normal Gait (1/2 hour) Flashcards
standing is a passive muscular activity except for ___
plantar flexion (gastrocs must activate or body will tilt forward)
Where is the line of gravity, in relation to the hip/knee/ankle for a standing human?
posterior to the hip.
anterior to the knee
anterior to the ankle.
If a person moves their knee anterior from a standing position, which muscle needs to be activated?
quads
If a person moves their hip posterior, which muscle needs to activate to maintain gravity?
gluteus maximus
Where is the pathology for a person with slap foot gait? (can’t dorsiflex effectively)
anterior compartment.
How do you treat slap foot gait?
most common = ankle foot orthosis to hold foot up. Also, walking boot works
Patient put on too man anticoagulants, leading to a retroperitoneal hematoma on CT. Person is very weak, unable to get out of bed. Quadriceps strength 0/5. Diagnosis?
Femoral neuropathy.
What does a quadriceps deficient gait look like? Also called?
They lurch forward, keeping their knee locked in hyperextension. Sometimes they push on their leg to keep it locked. Sometimes, their knee is sore as a result of being hyperextended all the time.
AKA back knee gait.
Which mm keep the pelvis level during the standing phase of gait?
gluteus medius and minimus.
who is a cane helpful for?
pt’s with lower extremity arthritis, and minimal uE arthritis.
what should you do for a patient with an epidural hematoma on the left side (UMN signs in the right arm and leg)? What kind of gait will she have?
She will have a spastic hemiplegia gait.
- lower leg lengthened (extensors stronger)
- arm flexed.
- leg is circumducted to compensate for extra length.
Give her a walker, provides support.!
Which type of walker can you walk faster?
3 wheeled!
If the line of gravity moves behind the knee, which muscle needs to contract?
quads!
describe antalgic gait.
painful gait
joint held immobile, stance on that side shortened.
What kind of orthosis would be helpful for a femoral neuropathy?
knee ankle orthosis.
