Great Britain blocked US ships from delivering supplies to Germany.
Wilson protested, saying this violated his neutral right to “freedom of seas.”
Submarine Warfare
Germany challenged Britain with their submarines, this resulted with British ships being sunk
Lusitania Crisis
On May 7, 1915, German torpedoes sunk British passenger liner.
This also killed Americans, which angered Wilson and warning Germany about “strict accountability.” Sec. State, Jennings Bryan resigned, saying his message was “too war like.”
The Sussex Pledge
After German torpedo hit the Sussex, Wilson threatened to cut it with Germany. This led to the Sussex Pledge, where Germany can’t sink unarmed ships

Since the US’s economy was closely linked with the Allied forces, their economy flourished by giving the Allied Forces supplied and loans for the War
Public Opinion
Wilson, being a British descendant, favored Britain and opposed Germany. Since a good portion of the country are 1st/2nd generation, they started to favor the country they came from

Some Republicans wanted to go at Germany, but a majority of people want peace and neutrality. Wilson was like yeah we’ll be fine (proceeds to expand armed forces through Congress). This led to the National Defense Act, which increased our warships and force

Anti-war people were Populists, socialists, and progressives. Many Suffragists campaigned against the military build up

Charles Evans Hughes VS Woodrow Wilson. The Democrat slogan, “he kept us out of war,” helped Wilson win the close election.
And right after this peace lover was sworn in, he went straight to Congress to declare war against Germany

Zimmerman Telegram
Germany asks Mexico to join them and promised to recover Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona if they won. Mexico didn’t accept but Britain overheard and went OoooO, I’m telling Americaaaa. This convinced Wilson to go at Germany
