7.5 Flashcards
How do atoms become ions?
By gainging or losing electrons
What is the difference between atoms and ions?
Atoms are neutral
Ions are charged atoms
How is an anion formed?
If an atom gains an electron, there are more negative electrons than positive protons.
The atom becomes a negative ion/anion
How is a caton formed?
If an atom loses an electron, there is an overall positive charge due to the extra proton compared to electron.
This ion is called a caton.
When does Ionisation occur?
When atoms come together to form chemical bonds
What is a full outer shell arrangement?
A stable arrangement.
8 electrons
What happens if an atom has 4 valence electrons? Does it lose or gain 4?
It can do either to get a full valence shell. The ion it forms will depend on the other chemicals involved.
What is the name and formula of an Oxygen ion?
Oxide (O²⁻)
2,6 -> 2,8
Gained 2 electrons
What is the name and formula of an Chlorine ion?
Chloride (Cl⁻)
2,8,7 -> 2,8,8
Gained 1 electron
What is the name and formula of an Sodium ion?
Sodium (Na⁺)
2,8,1 - > 2,8
Lost 1 electron
What is the name and formula of an Calcium ion?
Calcium (Ca²⁻)
2,8,8,2 -> 2,8,8
Lost 2 electrons
