7.4 the structure of the heart Flashcards
1
Q
describe the appearance of the heart
A
- 2 separate pumps
- left deals with oxygenated blood from the lings
- right deals with deoxygenated blood from the body
- each pump has 2 chambers: atrium and ventricle
2
Q
where is the aorta connected to?
A
- left ventricle → tissues
3
Q
where is the vena cava connected to?
A
- tissues → right atrium
4
Q
where is the pulmonary artery connected to?
A
- right ventricle→ lungs
5
Q
where is the pulmonary vein connected to?
A
- lungs → left atrium
6
Q
explain why the heart is made up of two adjacent pumps
A
- to increase its pressure before it is distributed to the rest of the body
- as capillaries have very low pressure
7
Q
explain how the structure of the heart is related to its function.
A
- right ventricle pumps blood only to the lungs
- thinner muscular wall than the left ventricle
- left ventricle pumps blood to the rest of the body
- thicker muscular wall
- enabling it to contract to create enough pressure to reach everywhere
