7.3 Reversible reactions Flashcards
Define hydrated
water is a part of the ion structure
Define water of crystallization
water in the salt
Define anhydrous
without water
Explain a reversible reaction
a reaction which can go either direction. Products can be reversed back into original reactants.
Define equilibrium
the rate of a forward reaction is equal to the rate of a backward reaction. there is no net change in concentrations of reactants and products
Explain the difference between equilibrium and reversible reactions
in equilibrium reactions, forward and reverse reactions go on at the same time whereas reversible reactions have 2+ seperate reactions e.g copper (II) sulfate
What colour does copper (II) sulfate change into when it’s heated/anhydrous
white
What colour does copper (II) sulfate change into when it becomes hydrated
blue
State at least 3 of the many features of equilibrium reactions.
- an equilibrium reaction only takes place in a closed place
- at equilibrium the concentrations of reactants and products remain fixed
- at equilibrium forward reaction happens at the same rate as the reverse reaction
Explain position of equilibrium
- it tells us how far the reaction is
- if product concentration is greater than reactant concentration it is to the right
- if reactant concentration is greater than product we say it is to the left
