7.3 Measuring The Process Flashcards
What ways can you measure the capacity of the lungs
Peak flow meter
Vitalographs
A spirometer
What is a peak flow meter
Measures the rate at which air can be expelled from the lungs
What is a vitalograph
More sophisticated than peak flow
Patient breaths out as quickly as they can through a mouthpiece and Intrument produces a graph of results
What is a spirometer
Measure different aspects of the lung volumes
What is tidal volume
Amount of air that moves into and out of the lungs with each resting breath
What is vital capacity
Volume of air that can be breathed in when the strongest possible exhalation is followed by deepest possible intake of breath
What is inspiratory and expiratory reserve volume
IRV - max vol of air you can breath in after normal inhalation
ERV- max vol of air you can breath out after normal exhalation
What is residual vol
Vol of air that’s left in the lungs when you’ve exhaled as hard as possible
What is total lung capacity
Sum of vital capacity and residual volume
How do you work out ventilation rate
Tidal volume x breathing rate per minute
