7.3 Measuring The Process Flashcards
What are the 3 key pieces of equipment that can be used to measured the volume of air drawn in and out of the lungs?
Peak flow meter, vitalograph, spirometer
What is tidal volume?
The volume of air that moves into and out of the lungs with each RESTING breath
What is vital capacity?
The volume of air that can be exhaled when the deepest possible intake of breath is followed by the strongest possible exhalation.
What is inspiratory reserve volume?
The maximum volume of air you can breathe in, over and above a normal inhalation
What is expiratory reserve volume?
The maximum volume of air you can breathe out, over and above te normal tidal volume of air
What is residual volume?
The volume of air that is left in your lungs when you have exhaled as hard as possible.
What is total lung capacity?
The sum of the vital capacity and the residual volume
What is breathing rate?
The number of breaths taken per minute
What is ventilation rate?
The total volume of air inhaled in one minute
How is ventilation rate calculated?
Tidal volume x breathing rate.
When does tidal volume increase?
When the oxygen demands for the body increase
