7.3 Flashcards
Spectrum
Rainbow band of colours that forms when a transparent prism detracts visible white light
Big Bang theory
A theory of how the universe was formed based off of how everything was held at a very dense point that expanded and exploded to form the universe.
Electromagnetic radiation
A type of energy that travels in waves. It is more commonly known as light. Examples include: -visible light -radio waves -microwaves -ultraviolet radiation -X-rays
Electromagnetic spectrum
A scale that measures different types of electromagnetic energy.
Spectroscope
A tool that separates light into ROYGBIV colours.
Spectral lines
A series of dark lines that appear in the colours of a star. It is studied to discover what elements can be found in the star. Found in absorption spectra
Spectral shifting
Red shift or blue shift
A movement to the left or the right of a spectral line’s original position in the spectrum of a light source that is stationary.
Doppler effect
Like sirens
Closer is compressed waves, blue shift
Moving farther away is stretched out waves red shift
Cosmic background radiation
A type of electromagnetic radiation that has an untraceable source.
CoBE
Cosmic background explorer sattelite
Makes detailed maps of background radiation
WMAP
Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe
Makes more detailed maps using more precise measurements and made an enhanced map
Wavelength
Repainted by the symbol lambda
Distance from two successive troughs or crests
Waves
There’s must veenergey when waves are made
Some will travel really fast others may travel really slow
Will appear to move but energy carries the wave
Crest
Top of a wavelength
Trough
Bottom of a wavelength
