7.2 The Mammalian Gaseous Exchange System Flashcards
1
Q
What is a globet cell ?
A
- secret mucus
- mucus traps microorganisms and dust / bacteria
- stops them from reaching the alveoli
2
Q
What is cilia ?
A
- lies on the cell surface lining the airways
- Beats the mucus
- Moves the mucus upward away from the alveoli towards the throat , where swallowed .
- helps prevent lung infections.
3
Q
What is elastic fibres ? Where?
A
- found in the walls of the trachea ,bronchi , bronchioles and alveoli .
- this helps the process of breathing out , expel air / to prevent bursting
- Recoil to help push the air out when exhaling
4
Q
What is the smooth muscle ? Where?
A
- in the walls of the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles .
- they control the diameter
- during excersise, muscle relaxes making the tubes wider .
- Less resistance to airflow and air can move in and out of the lungs .
5
Q
What are rings of cartilage ? Where ?
A
- in walls of trachea and bronchi
- this provides support
- stops trachea and bronchi collapsing when breathing in
- so pressure drops
6
Q
What do trachea have ?
A
- cartilage ( c-shaped )
-smooth muscle - globet cells
- ciliated epithelium
7
Q
What does bronchi have ?
A
- small pieces of cartilage
- smooth muscle
- elastic fibres
- globet cells
- ciliated epithelium
8
Q
What does the bronchioles have ?
A
- NO cartilage
- smooth muscle
- elastic fibres
- NO globet cells
- ciliated epithelium
9
Q
What does alveoli have ?
A
- NO cartilage
- NO smooth muscle
- Elastic fibres
- NO cilia
