7.2 Populations Flashcards
1
Q
What is a population?
A
• A group of organisms of the same species in a particular space at a particular time
• That can potentially interbreed to produce fertile offspring
2
Q
What is a gene pool?
A
All the alleles of all the genes in a population at a time
3
Q
What is allele frequency?
A
Proportion of an allele of a gene in a gene pool
4
Q
What does the Hardy-Weinberg principle state?
A
• Allele frequencies will mot change from generation to generation
• As long as population is large, mating is random, no immigration, no mutations, no selection
• P^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1
