7.2 measuring ventilation Flashcards
what’s tidal volume
the volume that moves in and out of the lungs with each resting breath
what’s vital capacity
the volume that can be breathed in when the strongest possible exhilation is followed by the strongest possible inhilation
what’s inspiratory reserve volume
the volume of air that can be breathed in over a normal inhilaton
what’s expiratory reserve volume
the amount of air that can be breathed out over the top of a normal exhilation
what’s residual volume
the volume of air that’s left into the lungs after the strongest possible exhilation
what’s total lung capacity
sum of residual volume and vital capacity
what measures the capacity of the lungs
a spirometer
what’s ventilation rate
tidal volume x breathing rate
what’s breathing rate
number of breaths taken per minute
what happens to breathing rate and the tidal volume when oxygen demands increase
tidal volume increases from 15% to around as much as 50% and breathing rate also increases
