7.2 Alpha particle scattering Flashcards
How dense is the material of the nucleus
10^16kgm-3
Briefly describe the alpha scattering experiment
Alpha particles were fired at a thin sheet of gold. Most of them passed through undeflected, some were deflected through small angles. A tiny fraction of them were deflected by more than 90 degrees
What did ernest rutherford conclude from this experiment
He concluded that the atom is mostly empty space with a positive nucleus in the centre, with some electrons in the empty space
What did rutherford also roughly calculate
the diameter of the nucleus
later, what did rutherford also conclude about alpha particles
When alpha particles gain electrons, they emit a spectrum exactly like helium
