72-76 - Forces Flashcards
What is weight?
The force (N) at which gravity pulls on an object
Formula involving mass, weight and gravity?
W=M*G
weight = mass x gravitational field strength
What is the definition of resultant force?
The overall force on a point or object which changes its velocity
What does it mean if the resultant force is 0 N?
The object is at a consistent velocity (stationary or steady movement)
If your driving force is 1000N and the air resistance is at 600N, what is the resultant force?
400N
What happens if there is a resultant force?
Acceleration or deceleration
What is needed for a steady speed?
0 resultant force
Resultant force (N) = ?
mass (kg) * acceleration (m/s^2)
f = ma
What is a reaction force?
An equal and opposite force
What does friction do?
Slows down and stops objects
What is drag?
The friction of an object passing through a fluid
How can drag be reduced?
Streamline object
What happens to the speed if the drag increases?
The speed increases too
What is terminal velocity?
When an object begins to fall at a steady speed
What happens in terms of forces when something falls?
- Gravity > friction, acceleration
- Speed increase = building friction
- Acceleration reduces, friction = gravity
- Terminal velocity achieved
