7.17 Flashcards
What is aircraft taxiing?
- movement of aircraft with its own engine power
How is the nose wheel steered during taxiing?
- hydraulically via nose wheel steering system
- max steering angle +/- 70*
What should you be aware of when taxiing?
- no personnel enters an area where the aircraft can cause injury or death
- ensure no FOD can be blown away or ingested by engines
- anyone in aircraft must have seatbelts in case aircraft suddenly stops
Safety precautions when taxiing?
- ground lock pins
- serviceable brake systems and tyre pressure
- ensure correct number of personnel (correct qualified staff etc)
- inform ATC
- ensure nose wheel system is engaged to steer
- ensure route taken is planned for
- nav lights and beacons must be on
- ensure personnel are briefed on what to do at arrival point
What is towing?
- movement of aircraft on the ground not under its own power
What strength are Towbars designed for?
- tensile
What loads are not intended for Towbars?
- torsional or twisting loads
What is incorporated into the bars to avoid snatching movements being transmitted to aircraft structure?
- shock absorber system (large spring)
What is incorporated to prevent excessive loads from occurring between tug and nose landing gear?
- shear pin
How do Towbarless tugs work?
- use hydraulic actuators to support and lift nose landing gear completely of the ground
Why use a remote control tug?
- increase parking space in hangers as it is small
- it can be placed behind the nose too (increased flexibility)
What is Bridle cable towing?
- ground is boggy or uneven and requires towing
- it is attached to each main landing gear
Towing speed should be limited to what pace?
- walking pace
What are the safety precautions in towing?
- Towing driver responsible for his vehicle and obeying instructions
- person in charge assign wing walkers
- qualified personnel in cockpit (brakes, hydraulics witness)
- do not start and stop suddenly
- check brakes and tyre pressure
- Do not exceed max turning angle
- chocks ready to be placed
- aircraft in hanger should not be parked in hanger without immediately being statically grounded
- contact ATC
What are the 4 types of jacks?
- Axle/ bottle jack
- Bipod jack
- tripod jack
- quadruple jack
What is an axle/ bottle jack used for?
- Used for wheel changes
What is a tripod jack used for?
- vertical lifts
What is a Quadrupod used for?
- 2 adjustable and 2 fixed
- to allow for uneven ground
