Why is group membership important to us as humans?
Membership is important to us as it consists of many advantages such as: making it easier for us to adapt to situations, and it enhances our brain development.
Explain the difference between in-groups and out-groups.
In-groups are groups that people belong to, whereas Out-groups are groups that people don’t belong to.
What is prejudice?
The pre-judging of people based on their membership in a particular social group.
Which factors are included in prejudice?
- “Us-them” thinking
- Out-group homogeneity bias
- In-group favouritism, Out-group derogation.
Name and explain the two theories of prejudice.
- Realistic Conflict Theory: The idea that competition for limited resources foster prejudice.
- Social Identity Theory: Prejudice stems from a need to enhance self-esteem.
What is the implicit bias test?
A test that reveals someone’s hidden or subconscious biases, through measuring attitudes and beliefs.
Name the schema associated with prejudice.
Stereotypes.
Define subtyping.
When a person does not fit into a specific stereotype.
Explain the shooter bias effect.
The tendency to think that anything a black individual is holding is a gun.
Explain what is a stereotype threat and name two ways to alleviate this issue.
A stereotype threat is when stereotypes create self consciousness and a change in behaviour.
