7.1 Periodic Table Flashcards
What did Mendeleev do when organising his periodic table?
-Arranged elements in order of atomic mass
-Lined up the elements in groups with similar properties vertically
-Left gaps where no element fitted the pattern and predicted the properties of these undiscovered elements
Reading from left to right, what are the elements arranged in order of?
Increasing atomic number
What is the name for the vertical columns that elements are arranged in?
Groups
What do all the elements in the same group have in common?
They all have atoms with the same number of outer shell electrons, and similar properties
What is the name for the horizontal columns that elements are arranged in?
Periods
What do all the elements in the same period have in common?
The number of the period is the number of the highest electron shell in an element’s atoms
-There is a repeating trend in properties (periodicity)
What is the chemistry of each element determined by?
Its electron configuration
What is the name for group 1 elements?
Alkali metals
What is the name for group 2 elements?
Alkaline earth metals
What is the name for group 3-12 elements?
Transition elements
What is the name for group 15 elements?
Pnictogens
What is the name for group 16 elements?
Chalcogens
What is the name for group 17 elements?
Halogens
What is the name for group 18 elements?
Noble gases.
