7.1 Compostion Of Matter Flashcards
Substance
Type of matter with a fixed composition that cannot be seperated with physical means
Element
Substance made up of atoms with the same identity
Ex: carbon hydrogen aluminum
Compound
Atoms of two or more elements combined
Ex: water(h2o), carbon dioxide(co2)
Mixture
Matierals made of 2 or more substances that can be seperated by physical means
Mixture
When different matierals are easily distinguished
Heterogeneous
Substances
Are uniform and spread out
Homogeneous
Filtration
Solids can be seperated from liquids by pouring the mixture through a filter
Magnetic attraction
Iron objects can be seperated from a mixture using a magnet
Evaporation
When left in open air liquid solutions can change to gas leaving solid components behind
Distilation
Liquids can be seperated from eachother by heating them up to the temperature at which one of the liquids boils. The liquid boils into a gas than the gas cools forming the liquid
