7.1 Flashcards
What do amino acids have in common?
Functional groups amino and carboxyl.
What is different between amino acids?
Side chains.
What is the monomer of protein?
Amino acids.
What is the polymer of protein?
Polypeptide.
What makes amino acids polar?
Polar functional group.
What makes amino acids acidic?
Gains electrons (-)
What makes amino acids basic?
Loses electrons (+)
What makes amino acids nonpolar?
No polar functional groups or symmetry.
Describe the primary structure.
Linear sequence of amino acids.
Describe the secondary structure.
Formed alpha helix and beta pleated sheets.
Describe the tertiary structure.
Folded up.
Describe the quaternary structure.
Multiple polypeptides bonding.
How can a substitution of an amino acid affect the structure?
The amino acid is going to want to face a different way and that changes the whole structure.
What is denaturation?
Conditions that disrupt H bonds and ionic bonds.
What are the conditions of denaturation?
Temperature, pH, salinity.
Is the function affected by the shape of the polypeptide?
Yes.
What are some types of proteins?
Hormones, enzymes, infrastructure, antibodies, transport.
What amino acids fold inside?
Hydrophobic.
What amino acids fold outside?
Hydrophilic.
What amino acids form ionic attractions?
Acidic and basic.
What amino acids form covalent disulfide bonds?
Cysetine.
What are the bonds that hold amino acids together called?
Peptide bonds.
What do hormones do?
Carry messages through the blood.
What do protein enzymes do?
Cut and join molecules together.
