7.1 Flashcards
What is a microorganism?
A microorganism is a living organism that can only be seen using a microscope. Like all living organisms microorganisms are made up of cells. Many of them are made up of only one cell. They are single celled or uni cellular
What are the four different kinds of microorganisms?
The four different kinds of microorganisms are bacteria, fungi, Protozoa and algae
What is the singular form of bacteria?
The singular form of bacteria is bacterium
Which fungi is large and easy to see?
Mushroom and toadstool are large and easy to see
Where do fungi threads grow?
Fungi threads grow underground or in dead logs
Singular form of fungi
The singular form of fungi is fungus
Is each bacteria made up of one cell or many?
One cell
Is bacteria harmful?
Most bacteria is harmless but there are a few kinds that can make u ill
What is the powdery substance you see sometimes on the surface of grapes?
The powdery substance you sometimes see on the surface of grapes is millions of cells of yeast
Is yeast a microscopic fungus?
Yes, yeast is a microscopic fungus
What is a colony?
A colony is a collection of cells
How do microorganisms grow?
A single microorganism is to small to see without a microscope but when left to grow a single bacterium or fungus divides repeatedly to make a collection of many cells. These colonies are easy to see without a microscope. You can do this safely in the laboratory. Scientists let microorganisms grow in a Petri dish containing a special kind of jelly called agar jelly. The dish and jelly have to be sterile which means all living organisms have to be dead.
What are tiny plant like living organisms called?
Algae
Singular form of algae?
Alga
What is an animal like organism called?
Protozoa
