what is excluded from the term “vessel engaged in fishing”
vessels fishing with trolling lines or other apparatus which does not restrict manoeuvrability
what does “safe speed” mean?
speed at which a vessel can take proper and effective action to avoid collision
how does one approach a bend in a narrow channel
keep to the starboard side of the channel, approach with one long blast on horn
who has right of way in a narrow channel
small boat (<20m) give way to big boat,
how does one join a traffic separation scheme lane?
at as small an angle as possible to the general direction of the traffic flow
how does one cross a TSS lane?
at right angle to it
who has to give way in an overtaking scenario?
overtaking boat has to give way, regardless of type of boat
who has to give way in a head on scenario?
both boats blast 1 short blast and alter course to starboard side I.e. pass the other ship on the port,
a sail boat and a power boat are approaching head on, who has right of way?
sail boat
2 power boats are approaching at 90 deg angle, who should give way? what should stand on boat do?
If boat A is approaching boat B, on boat A’s starboard, Boat A should give way and head to the stern of boat B I.e. if you see red, you give way.
stand on boat keeps course with caution - be ready to alter course to starboard if necessary, never alter to port
sail boat vs power boat at 90 deg angle, who has right of way?
sail boat is stand on boat (assuming making way under wind)
what is the sequence of priority in vessel type
1) vessel not under command
2) vessel restricted in ability to manoeuvre
3) vessel constrained by draught
4) vessel engaged in fishing
