7. The recovery of Tsarist power Flashcards
How did returning troops from the R-J War help the Tsar recover power?
The returning troops were sent to crush worker’s protests in the cities, with 100,000 recalled to end the Revolution. The troops were loyal to the Tsar because they had not been exposed to radical propaganda while away and the Ministry of War had given into their demands to secure their loyalty. He doubled their pay, increased rations, issued new clothing and granted them bedding and handkerchiefs. As a result all mutinies ceased in December.
How did the Government crush the Soviet?
To begin with, the Okhrana arrests leading figures in the Soviet and the Government declared martial law. In December, the St. Petersburg Soviet was closed by force when Tsarist troops stormed a meeting while Trotsky was speaking. A Bolshevik-led armed uprising then occurred in Moscow but it was crushed by Tsarist soldiers, with over 1000 dead. Crushing the Soviet effectively brought the 1905 Revolution to an end.
Why and how did the Tsar survive the 1905 Revolution?
. The October Manifesto successfully divided the Tsar’s opponents.
. Concessions to soldiers won the loyalty of the returning army.
. The 1905 protests were uncoordinated and had little unity or leadership.
. The Tsar had the support of the Black Hundreds and the Union of Russian people.
. The workers of St. Petersburg and Moscow were overwhelmed by the force of the returning troops.
What was the Electoral Law of December 1905?
It failed to give the Liberals what they wanted, making votes unequal, with more power to the wealthy, not enfranchising women, soldiers and some workers, and it decided that the Duma would be elected by indirect elections.
What highlights the only partial recovery of Tsarist Russia?
. Political parties and trade unions were legalised, allowing the formation of opposition groups.
. The new Duma of 1906 could veto laws proposed by the Tsar, ending his complete authority over law making.
. Protest continued in Poland and Finland until 1906, showing that the Tsar had not re-established full control over his Empire.
. Russification had been ended in Finland in order to end the protests of Finnish nationalists.
