7: Solid state chemistry Flashcards
what are the 3 crystal systems with right angles called?
cubic, tetragonal, and orthorhombic
what are the 4 crystal systems without right angles called?
rhombohedral, hexagonal, monoclinic, and triclinic
describe cubic crystal system…
cubic - with three sides of equal length (all angles right angles)
describe tetragonal crystal system…
tetragonal - with two sides of equal length (all angles right angles)
describe orthorhombic crystal system…
orthorhombic - with all sides of unequal length (all angles right angles)
describe rhombohedral crystal system…
rhombohedral - pulling a cubic structure at opposite corners (the sides remain all equal length, and the angles are all the same but not right angles)
describe hexagonal crystal system…
hexagonal - two opposite edges of a tetragonal system are pushed towards one another until the angles are 60° and 120°
describe monoclinic crystal system…
monoclinic - orthorhombic is pushed over in one direction so one angle is no longer 90°
describe the triclinic crystal system…
triclinic system - this has no equal angles and no sides equal
