7 Racial Inequality Flashcards
explanations of the problem of racialization
- the result of historical racist practices that have disadvantaged economic prosperity among Black ppl
- agency (Black ppl disproportionately experience disadvantages of laws)
intersectionality
diff groups experience oppression in diff ways and at diff levels based on diff markers of identity like class, race, sexual orientation, gender, etc.
internalized oppression
Marxist concept referring to how exploitation (in a sexist and racist society) is accepted as part of reality
problems with identity politics/intersectionality as a solution
- it’s almost impossible to reconcile power imbalances (cyclical conflict wherein policies will try to shift the balance but give too much power to one side)
- history suggests that power imbalance is endemic to the human condition (a small group of ppl will always dominate the majority)
- “snake eating its own tail” (intersectionality makes group cohesion more difficult)
infighting
deep divisions within a social movement
2 ideas that distinguished the American slavery system
- perpetual slavery (your generation and future gens will be slaves and can’t be freed)
- slaves were legally considered property (some countries recognized rights of slaves)
Civil Rights Movements of the 1960s
the end of segregation in the South
block voting
when a group generally all votes the same way; sometimes, these blocks can swing and can be a result of groups having a parked political identity
disadvantage of block voting
it’s easy to take advantage of that block or take that constituency for granted
advantage of block voting
can be used as a serious pressure point on an individual, issue, state, or party
voter suppression
if you have a block of voters and you know they vote the other way, the aim is to lower these votes by making it less accessible for them to vote (restrictive voting laws)
